Ars Macabra
Ars Macabra is a 4 piece black metal band from Italy. I recently got their new album "III" in the mail and it is worth the listen again and again!
1) How are you these days?
Sathor: Doing ok,thanks
2) Ars Macabra began back in 1998.
Who started the band and were you one of the original members?
Sathor: Yea I started the band
3) While we are at it, are all the members you have today original members?
Sathor: I am the only original member left.
4) In 1999 you released your first demo "Iter In Obscuritate Mentis
Looking back now, how do you feel about that demo these days?
Sathor: Was a lot of energy although those energies were channeled in a naive or inexperienced way even technical
wise we were attempting different kind of sounds.
5) Do you remember all that went into your first demo and were you at all nervous of the response it would get from the fans and "critics"?
Sathor: It was more for me to find out how all that I was experiencing with my ideas
on music occult interest would turn on something real.
In this case our first demo.
Like if all those efforts were able to transmit outside of me of those feeling I always felt in my life, fan....critics....
fan is a word that I do not use that much. Its meaning and use is closely linked to the world of commercial pop and mass culture... as far as critics go I don't know, we had quite a bit of attention at the time.
6) 5 years later in 2004 you came out with your very first full length
album "Daemonolatria Hypnotica!
If you had to go back today, is there anything on that album that you would have done differently? If so, what?
Sathor: Almost everything, but just because things change in such a short time span that I can rewrite or re-record a song even 10 in after I have done with it...so I consider the question quite a non sense to me.
7) Has Ars Macabra played live? If so, where was your favorite place to play and where would your dream tour be?
Sathor: Anywhere outside of Italy is good !!! There are no "dream tour" at least for us and our underground reality whatsoever.
8) In 2007 you released another full length "Hate Induced Trance, this time with
Ingar Amlien from Crest of Darkness as guest vocals.
Was this just on the song Hate Induced Trance?
How did that work out and do you see yourselves working together in the future?
Sathor: I.A. has sung on two H.I.T. tracks, we met him in a venue in Belgium and since we kept in touch and
we collaborated for the upcoming "H.I.T." cd, he is a nice man very dedicated.
Who knows if there will be the chance we will be always grateful to his contribution.
9) You are from Italy. Tell us about the scene there?
Who would be your favorite band from there these days and does this band inspire any of your
music in Ars Macabra?
Sathor: .......Scene, another thing that must reside within the dream and wish of many kids who do not know or hope to be the center of attention or some sort of phenomenon.
Our national culture has its roots that comes from anything but rock 'n' roll.
Here mentality has developed mainly by a mimicking and imitation of what truly has happened in England and
the united states but the DNA of our living the rock n roll spirit has nothing genuine.
Consequently, it is grotesque sort of speak of a "scene" in places such as my country.
There are musical phenomena of various kinds but many seem to me often grotesque if not embarrassing.
10) I truly love your music. Right now I am actually listening to the song "With
the Fires of Titan" off your latest full length "III" that actually just
came out in Jan. of this year.
Do you have a favorite song off this album?
Sathor: "Illuminati" and "Thanatos Projection"
11) and do any of them hit you as a more personal song?
Sathor: Well almost all of them , the whole album has the right direction and feeling I feel very
satisfied with it.
12) So you are a 4 piece band, correct?
And you play guitar? Do each of the band members write their own music/lyrics or is it just one
or two of you who do this?
Sathor: Yes, correct.
Mainly me and my bass player write the music and lyrics.
13) would you consider Ars Macabra an "underground" band? If so, do you plan
to stay that way or do you want to be rock stars someday wearing those
over sized sunglasses? hehe
Sathor: Lets say I just wear huge sunglasses how about that!?
Big sunglasses rules...kind of.
14) Your latest album was released on Odium Records.
How have they treated you and do they do a lot of promotion for you guys?
Sathor: It's an excellent label they do their job honestly and putting a lot of time into it.
15) I see you have gotten a lot of reviews of this new full length album
"III"
How has the response been from the people who "know best" ?
Sathor: The reviews are all good really i didn't read any that was putting us down.
Response wise, it's all pretty imperceptible since is almost all beyond the net now and very few are the
printed mag or the people that you met in person that can say things about your music etc. It's all out there or in this monitor for most of the time you know.
16) Would you consider being in Ars Macabra as fun? And if it was no longer
fun, would you consider hanging it up?
Sathor: I think I am gonna pass on this one ;)
17) Even though right now your new album is on all our mind's, which album
do YOU think your fans consider your "best" release? Why do you think that is?
Sathor: You really like the word fan don't you :)
???
"III" I think the people we know consider the best.
I do consider it to be the best album so far.
Why? ..because ideas are fully developed, we are a little bit more
mature and complete that the previous album, we took our time to do it well.
18) Every band evolves and changes over the years.
How would you say Ars Macabra has changed over the years, if at all?
Sathor: Absolutely, I felt that when there is really nothing you think you can do , when you think you reached all you can do , is the the point where you got the chance to improve and catch new ideas , is all
a matter of a bit of commitment and believing in what you do.
19) Just for fun....you can go on tour with your 3 favorite bands.
What 3 bands would you pick and do you think the line up for those shows
would work out?
Sathor: humm
I dont know I would let you choose , sometimes with these kinds of things I prefer
an outside point of view. Musicians should do the musicians I have hard time to
deal with people and also promoting.
I just want to play and do it well, making contacts and dealing with bands is not my thing.
I would prefer maybe and share time with somebody who has same thought as mine not just musically speaking of course.
20 ) Well, it has been a pleasure doing this interview with you.
I do hope some of the questions made you think a bit....
Is there anything you would like to say to end this interrogation?
Sathor: Good luck with your promoting activity and manager career Vinteress !
As last thing, I would say to who is reading .....just act instinctively and
spontaneously leave at home fake attitudes
