Svarthaueg
Svarthaueg is a Black Metal Band from Norway.
When I first heard their music I was blown away.
Now it is MY turn to pick the brain of Svarthaueg
and see what is going on past and present with these
guys.
S= Svarthaueg (guitars)
A= Adramelech (vocals)
1) Hello. Thank you for taking the time out of your
day to do this interview with me.
A: thank you for the interest!
2) So, the beginning of Svarthaueg started back in 2005.
What band or person set the wheel spinning for you
to start this band?
S: Yes I started the band as a solo project back in
2005. I wrote and recorded 6 songs between 2005-2007. It was never official
released, and the drums didn’t sound good. In late 2009 I was looking for
members to continue Svarthaueg after I had played in some other bands. And I
met up with Kark (former bass player) Adramelech (Vocals) and later Defest
(drums) . It was actually first when I met up with Adramelech and Defest things
start to happen as we had a stabile lineup. In 2011 we did our first official
recording and released the 4 track Ep Ritual in December 2012.
3) I have been a long time follower of the NBM
scene.
How is it there these days and was it hard coming in
during the mid 2000's after such great bands like Emperor and Immortal made
a pathway?
S: Well, there is a lot of good bands from Trondheim
these days! For me it was/is never important to be a part of the scene. I create
and play music and have my own reason for that.
4) You call yourselves "Anti cosmic Black metal"
explain to us what that is and how it differs from simply Black
Metal...
S: It is a different way of thinking. We use things in our own life to connect to the
music. and that reflects the Anti Cosmic philosophy and occult study. A lot of
“regular” black metal bands don’t take any study on Satanism or have any
interest or passion exploring the dark realms and the philosophy of
Satan.
5) After 7 long years of the band's birth you released your EP "Ritual"
Tell us a little bit about the making of this 4 song EP and did it succeed all your expectations?
S: I had a hard time finding members but after I met up with Adramelech and showed him some bad recordings I have done. He liked it, and was excited to do the vocals in Svarthaueg. We had members coming and going
over a period of time but ended up with Defest on drums and Kark (former member)
on bass. It was actually recorded at the rehearsal room. I guess it turned out
ok, but it could be better. All 4 songs from the Ep is re-recorded and will
appear on our full length Drakonsk Magi.
6) Aside from Svarthaueg, you are also in another band DØDSFALL.
Since Svarthaueg is your main band does it take priority over the other band and
how do you find time for both bands? (Both bands are coming out with new albums this summer,)
S) Adramelech is in Dødsfall, Not me.
A) Regarding the current situation with dødsfall , we will not be able to play live shows for now.
So time is not a problem at this moment, but of course our priority is to get a full line up
and to do some live shows with dødsfall as soon as Ishtar moves to Sweden!
7) As I stated above, Svarthaueg started out as a solo project.
At what point did you decide to make it a full band and
WHAT made you decide to bring in other members?
S: in 2007 I started to play some Svarthaueg songs
together with a drummer but he didn’t have the interest to play this kind of
black metal. So I started to look for members the same year and was continue to
make riffs and lyrics for svarthaueg. First in 2009 I got a “stabile” lineup.
And when Adramelech and later Defest joined the band it got serious with regular
rehearsals. The main reason for take in other members was because I wanted to
record something good! (I am not a good vocalist or drummer)
8) I also mentioned the band's new album "Drakonsk
Magi"(Coming out possibly in June or July of 2013)
What does this album title mean and does it play any
part in the lyrical parts of this new album?
S: Drakonsk Magi is the magic of clear-seeing.
Most people are living in a glass globe which is misted over by themselves.
Through the mist they can only see the outlines of the world outside. The mist
reflects the image of themselves and they are interpreting the world outside
through their own reflection. They are caught in "a bubble of
self-contemplation". The world outside the glass globe is what is called chaos
and the unknown. It is "the dark side".. Yes.
A: In one way it represent the journey which svarthaueg is drifting
towards, up from the filth to create something primal but majestic.
Towards the new era which will light a new dawn.
9) You are signed to Ketzer Records.
How did this relationship form and are you pleased with how they are working with you guys so far?
A) It actually happened quiet random.
I was talking to stig from wolf`s lair about labels and he just told me to send a message to ketzer.
As for your other question, yes we are pretty pleased by both the deal and effort ketzer is doing for our upcoming
release!
10) Tomorrow night, (May 11th) you will be playing a live show in Oslo.
What can fans who have never seen you play live before expect from your live performance and what have you been doing to prepare?
A: I don’t know, I guess they would just have to come and see for them self …
AS for the preparations, considering our troubles with former members our main
priority has been to just rehearse with our step in bassist and our new session
guitarist to full fill every aspect of the chaotic image that we are trying to
paint…
11) After 8 years now, is Svarthaueg where you had hoped it would be or did your hopes and dreams outweigh reality?
S: Well, time is changing. At first I didn’t look at Svarthaueg as a live band at all but
Adramelech changed my mind heh. So things don’t always goes as you think/wish. But things are working out fine and we have the debut album is released in summer. So I am satisfied!
12) You made a video for your song "Balam" from your previous release.
Are their plans of another video and if so, do you have a specific song in place yet for that new video?
S: No. No plans for another video..
13) One of the places you have played live is Russia!
How was that experience and is there any place that you and the guys have dreams of touring?
A: Beyond all expectations, the audience and scene in
Russia is completely different from here in Norway, you can really feel the
energy and dedication which you really can`t find here in Norway.
AS for your other question, I don’t personally have
any dreams regarding touring..
My only goal is to spread our chaos as far as we can
reach; this is simply just a physical plane of abomination for me, and we are
just a small piece of the puzzle which shall destroy and
illuminate!
14) Talk to me a bit about your "Live Rituals" ......
S: Something’s should stay in the shadow….
15) You have stated before that the lyrics just come to you.
Does this mean you only write lyrics when they "come
to you" or do you ever sit down and really focus on what is going on in your
life at that time and just write?
S: When I write the lyrics I often make all the guitar riffs first then the lyrics.
But these days Adramelech is doing the most of the lyrics and I focus on the song writing.
A) Well yes and no ….
Usually all my lyrics represent my current studies,
but it can often be quiet an obsession to find the right elements or essence if
u like, to create a live ritual trough the hymns.
16) Describe in 3 words Svarthaueg's music to someone who has never heard your music before.
S: Chaotic black metal
17) Care to explain a bit about why Dødsherre Xarim of the band Djevelkult is now playing session and live guitar for you guys?
S: Because we sound better live with 2 guitars. And I prefer session guitarists who don’t take any part in song writing. Svarthaueg has to sound like svarthaueg.
Xarim is a great guy and a good guitarist!
18) Ok, one final question and a bit of a personal question.
Outside of your music...I know you have a long time girlfriend.
What do the two of you do for fun and is she a big supporter and
encouragement to push on with your music?
S: Yes I have a long time girlfriend but I guess
this question is addressed to Adramelech?
A: Well we are both quite fond of being out in the
nature, it is important to not get swallowed by the modern days which only
destroys our spiritual mind… so I guess I would say camping, fishing and just to
connect with your true self, is one of our favorite “activities” together
.
As for the other part, I would really like to thank my girlfriend for the support
and for holding out trough my musical and spiritual obsessions….
Thank you so much for your time and I really look
forward to reading your replies.
Any final words?
S: HDHM!
